HEALTHY ACTIVE OREGON
An Oregon-based coalition focused on policy, systems, and environmental change that combat the negative impacts of industry influence. We advocate for nutrition security, an equitable built environment, and against weight stigma in public health with an overall goal of reducing health disparities. We lead in advancing dialogue, empowering communities, and piloting policies around the state.
GUIDING PRINCIPLES
Healthy Active Oregon adheres to the following guiding principles in all aspects of its work:
A strong effective coalition must include people with intersecting social identities and lived experience (i.e., race, ethnicity, gender, body size, socioeconomic status, immigration status, sexual orientation, age, and disability, etc.) in its organizational- and leadership-building approach.
Setting thinness as the definition of good health has caused harm in communities and individuals over time. We will embrace and honor all body shapes and sizes as we plan our coalition priorities, advocacy, and outreach.
Hunger and lack of access to safe physical activity impact Oregonians of all backgrounds across the lifespan. Improving related health outcomes will require complex, multifaceted, multi-sector solutions by exploring the root causes of these disparities.
Prioritizing policy, systems, and environmental approaches with the most potential for sustainable, population-level impact while encouraging the implementation of evidence-based programs is critical to transforming current trends in Oregon.
We will advance policies that remove systemic barriers to nutrition security and an equitable built environment while working to push back against weight bias and stigma in these areas.
